BarterSt.com or "Barter Street" as its pronounced was created early in 2007 by me Thomas Newman. I am actually a filmmaker who works in the local Vancouver film industry as a Producer/Director on various levels. I own and operate my own production company called Mind In Motion Inc. which is how I make my living.
I decided to create a site where money was not the center of focus as it is on so many other sites now a days with the exception of a few. Im tiered of all the "Buy this" and "Buy that" types of web pages that plague the internet highway. Its like trying to drive down an actual highway but having thousands upon thousands of salesmen flag you down and try to sell you something when all you want to do is get from A to B! It was so much better back in the days before our lives were run by corporations whose sole interest is profit. Before there was ever currency, there was "Bartering". This was and still is the worlds cheapest cost affective method to get what you want in exchange for what you have to offer.
I got so sick of people on other sites such as craigslist trying to get something for free from those who just wanted to be paid for their items or services. Dont get me wrong, Craigs list is a great site and its not anything that they are doing, nor is there anything wrong in wanting something for free as long as you're willing to give something back in return for those items or services you desire. The problem is trying to barter on sites where people want money and nothing else. So, I thought wouldn't it be great to have a site that says right off the bat, that "YOUR MONEY IS NO GOOD HERE!" or "NO CASH ALLOWED"? This way everyone knows what to expect from one another right off the bat. With this light going off in my head, I decided to seek out a programmer to convey my thoughts to, in hopes of building such a web page. After months and months of planning and designing the concept, I finally had something I could show to that programmer in hopes of getting it build. I did an extensive search in order to find the right company that could handle the design and operations of this site. I finally found The Next Level.ca which was able to take my plans and put them to action as you can see here. I hired them on, became incorporated ( Wish I could've bartered with my lawyer about his fees) and the rest is what you see here.
Today Barter St. is continually working on making the site better for its members. I have hired on a web advertising Guru that knows what it takes to create a great web site and how to make that web site stand out from the rest by optimizing it. Every single day our databse grows with members and content, thanks to their efforts. Barter Street does NOT charge a cent for any of its members to post their listings with pictures. It is totally free for people of all ages who have something to trade in the form of an Item or Service. We all have items stored in our attics, under the stares and in the garage, so do something with it. If you dont need it, then trade it for what you do need! if you have a service or skill such as you're a painter who is not good with cars, you could trade your painting skills with a mechanic. Its up to you what you want to trade and with who you want to trade it with. The site also makes ZERO dollars! I have some advertisement banners displayed as part of a banner exchange program with Google in order to help drive traffic to the site. When people click on these banners it takes them to some other site that they may be interested in because of what they saw in the banner. My goal is to make barterSt.com as big as e-bay and some of those other massive sites like Facebook. I can only do this by word of mouth because advertising costs thousands of dollars and for a site that makes ZERO, it's not very possible. So please make an account and start trading with people and see where we end up. Also dont forget to tell a friend or 100 friends! LOL
